Since the early 1990s, the evolution of the Business Process Management (BPM) discipline has been marked by successive waves of automation technologies. Initial advancements primarily focused on automating individual tasks, such as robotic process automation (RPA) for repetitive operations or workflow management systems for coordinating specific business segments. Subsequently, the emphasis of BPM shifted towards the orchestration and optimization of end-to-end processes, aiming for more efficient and flexible business operations. These technological advancements significantly improved enterprise operational efficiency and responsiveness, though often requiring predefined rules and explicit process paths. However, the emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) and Agentic Artificial Intelligence (Agentic AI) is now ushering in another transformative wave in the BPM domain. Unlike previous automation technologies that largely relied on preset rules and explicit programming, Agentic AI possesses enhanced autonomy, adaptability, and decision-making capabilities.
