Dynamic Targeting of Satellite Observations Using Supplemental Geostationary Satellite Data and Hierarchical Planning
The Dynamic Targeting (DT) mission concept represents an innovative approach to satellite observation, wherein a lookahead sensor collects information about the forthcoming environment to intelligently plan observations. Previous research has demonstrated that DT has the potential to enhance scientific returns across various applications. However, DT mission concepts must confront challenges such as the limited spatial extent of onboard lookahead data, instrument mobility, data throughput, and onboard computational constraints. This study illustrates how the performance of DT systems can be significantly improved by utilizing supplemental data streamed from geostationary satellites, which provide lookahead information up to 35 minutes in advance, as opposed to the conventional 1-minute window.
