AI-assisted coding is revealing a divide among developers that has always existed but was less visible before. Prior to AI, developers were engaged in the same daily tasks: writing code by hand, using the same editors, languages, and pull request workflows. Craft-loving developers and those focused on efficiency appeared indistinguishable as they shipped the same products, with their motivations hidden behind identical processes. Now, with the advent of AI, developers face a fork in the road: they can either allow machines to write code and focus on directing what gets built, or they can insist on hand-crafting their code. This shift has made the underlying motivations of developers more apparent.
