Rationale Behind Human-Led Autonomous Truck Platooning

The rapid advancement of autonomous trucking has transitioned from early demonstrations to OEM-integrated commercial deployments in recent years. However, achieving fully driverless freight operations across diverse climates, infrastructure conditions, and regulatory environments remains a significant technical and social challenge. This study presents a systematic rationale for human-led autonomous truck platooning as a pragmatic intermediate pathway. An analysis of 53 major truck accidents across North America from 2021 to 2026 reveals that human-related factors continue to be the dominant contributors to severe crashes, underscoring the necessity for advanced assistance and automated driving systems, as well as the complexity of real-world driving environments. Further research will provide essential insights and guidance for the future of autonomous driving technology.
